Nach einer guten Mütze Schlaf sind wir heute morgen gestärkt aufgewacht und nach dem Frühstück ready für den Tag. Heute ist unser First Stop der „Eastern Market“. Diesen Markt gibt es seit dem 19. Jahrhundert, wo lokale Bauern ihr Gemüse vertrieben. Heutzutage ist es ein Sammelbecken für alles mögliche. Kunst, Schmuck, Essen, Blumen und viel Musik. Als wir auf dem Markt ankommen treffen wir direkt Mike am Corner. Mike ist einer von mehreren Kulturschaffenden, die den Verein „Culture Creators“ gegründet haben. Er und die Culture Creators organisieren viele Events in Detroit und sind unsere Partner*innen Organisation für das #yaedetroitberlin Projekt.
Nun trudeln langsam alle Teilnehmenden aus Detroit ein und die Freude ist groß, sich nach etlichen Zoom-Sessions, Face-Time Gesprächen und Virtualität endlich in der Realität zu treffen! Die Lautstärke der Gruppe nimmt hörbar zu und kurze Zeit später tummeln wir uns mit mehr als 20 Teilnehmenden in den Menschenmassen des „Eastern Market“. Die Stimmung auf dem Markt ist ausgelassen. Die Menschen wirken gelöst. Überall stehen Blumen, Kunst und Marktstände in den alten Lagerhallen von South West Detroit. Das Rumschlendern auf dem Markt ergibt ein schönes Setting für die ersten Gespräche, für den ersten Austausch zwischen Detroiter*innen und Berliner*innen. Nach einer Weile treffen wir uns alle bei Bert‘s Warehouse einer Bar wovor ein großes amerikanisches Barbecue stattfindet. Begleitet von einem ohrenbetäubenden Blues Gitarristen, der singt und Schlagzeug zur selben Zeit spielt, bestellen wir uns in Barbecuesauce getränkte Ribs, Chickenwings oder auch Veggieburger mit Mac&Cheese oder vielen anderen Beilagen. Auch beim Blick in die Bar zeigt sich eine schöne Szene. Alle möglichen Menschen treten reihenweise auf die Bühne und singen vor der mit Feiernden vollgepackten Bar Karaoke. Teilweise auch einfach nur Akkapella. Auffällig ist, dass die Menschen, die auf die Bühne treten nicht wie Rockstars aussehen, aber so singen. Und so steht man hier und badet in den Freuden des Publikums und ist fasziniert von diesen vielen talentierten Menschen und der leichtfüssigen und positiven Atmosphäre.
Satt und zufrieden machen wir uns nun zu einem erneuten Rundgang über den Markt auf, diesmal aber liegt der Fokus weniger auf dem Markt, als auf der Urban Art die in der Gegend des Markts zu finden ist. Augenmerk legen wir dabei auf Graffitis, die sich mit dem Thema der Native Americans befasst und bekommen hierbei tiefere Einblicke in die Konflikte mit denen diese Minderheit konfrontiert ist.
Nach vielen wertvollen und interessanten Inputs setzen wir uns wieder in unsere Mietwagen und fahren nun zum Sitz der Culture Creators. Auf einem Grundstück an der 4114 Bagley Street renoviert der Verein zwei Häuser in eigener Regie und nutzt den Raum um ihre Projekte und Events umzusetzen. Sie zeigen uns Haus und Garten und wir verbringen hier den Rest des Tages und Abends im Gespräch, mit Rehearsel-Sessions, am Feuer, im Studio und beim Abendessen. Zwischendurch macht Mike von den Culture Creators nochmals auf den morgigen Tag aufmerksam an dem das von Ihnen organisierte und seit vielen Monaten geplante Festival stattfinden wird. Es werden DJ‘s auflegen, viel mexikanisches Essen angeboten, eine Wrestling Show stattfinden, ein Bullride aufgebaut und lokale Künstler*innen aber auch unsere Teilnehmenden auftreten. After a good night’s sleep we woke up this morning invigorated and after breakfast ready for the day. Today our first stop is the “Eastern Market”. This market has been around since the 19th century, where local farmers sold their vegetables. Nowadays it is a gathering place for all kinds of things. Art, jewelry, food, flowers and lots of music. As we arrive at the market we meet Mike at the corner. Mike is one of several people who founded the association “Culture Creators”. The Culture Creators and him organise many events in Detroit and are our partner organisation for the #yaedetroitberlin project.
Now all participants from Detroit are slowly arriving and the joy is great to finally meet in reallife after several zoom sessions, face-time conversations and virtuality! The volume of the group increases remarcably and soon we are with more than 20 participants in the crowds of the “Eastern Market”. The mood at the market is exuberant. The people seem relaxed. Flowers, art and market stalls are everywhere in the old warehouses of South West Detroit. Strolling around the market creates a nice setting for the first conversations between Detroiters and Berliners. After a while we all meet at Bert’s Warehouse, a bar where a big American barbecue takes place. Accompanied by a deafening blues guitarist who sings and plays drums at the same time, we order ribs soaked in barbecue sauce, chicken wings or veggie burgers with Mac&Cheese and many other side dishes. A look inside the bar also reveals a beautiful scene. All sorts of people step up in rows and sing karaoke in front of the bar packed with revelers. Partly also simply Akkapella. What’s striking is that the people who step on stage don’t look like rock stars, but sing like them. And so we stand here and bathe in the joys of the audience and are fascinated by these many talented people and the light-footed and positive atmosphere.
Sated and satisfied, we now set off on another tour around the market, but this time the focus is less on the market and more on the urban art that can be found in the area of the market. We focus on graffiti that deals with Native Americans and get a deeper insight into the conflicts their people is facing.
After a lot of valuable and interesting input we get back into our rental cars and drive to the headquarters of the Culture Creators. On a property at 4114 Bagley Street, the association renovates two houses on their own and uses the space to implement their projects and events. They show us around the house and garden and we spend the rest of the day and evening here talking, having rehearsal sessions, around the fire, in the studio and having dinner. In between Mike from the Culture Creators draws our attention to tomorrow’s festival, which they have organized and planned for many months. There will be DJ’s, lots of Mexican food, a wrestling show, a bullride and performances by local artists as well as our participants. But more about that tomorrow…
